Need to purify your organism to start afresh? The detox cure help your body eliminate toxins and thus regain form and vitality. Find out here why and how to do a detox cure to enjoy all its benefits.
Why detoxify your body?
Detox is the diminutive of detoxification. Why detoxify? Mainly because our food is often too rich in additives, saturated fats, sugars: these “toxins” are difficult to digest, sort out and reject by our body. Beyond the food aspect, our body also accumulates toxins related to stress and poor lifestyle: pollution, tobacco, drugs, sedentary lifestyle… The benefit of detoxification is to reduce the body of toxins and overloads accumulated to cleanse the body and regain energy.
Detoxification requires better elimination. The aim is to activate the drainage of the emunctory organs, responsible for evacuating our waste: the liver, at the centre of detoxification, the intestines, the kidneys, the lungs, the skin.
Test: do you need a detox?
- I’m tired all the time.
- As I’m tired, I move less; I gain weight.
- I feel nauseous, heavy, “dirty”.
- I digest badly, slowly.
- I have a stomachache, bloating.
- I am constipated.
- I feel like I’m more vulnerable to germs, for longer.
- I have small pimples, patches on my skin, allergies.
- I often have headaches.
- I know that my diet is too fatty, too sweet, too alcoholic.

In practice: how to do a detox cure?
First, start by correcting your eating habits and remove:
- Dairy products (apart from yoghurts and goat or sheep cheese)
- Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, oats…)
- Fats of animal origin (fatty meats, delicatessen, butter, fresh cream, cheese…)
- Industrial dishes, pastries, chocolate…
Favour a vegetarian and organic diet, consisting only of seasonal vegetables and fruit, with a little wholegrain cereal, cooked with olive oil and fresh herbs. It’s often a good idea to do so, as seasonal fruit and vegetables correspond exactly to our body’s needs!
It’s an opportunity to return to vital raw, non-fouling food:
- Vegetables (raw vegetables or green juices)
- Fresh fruit
- Whole grains, legumes
- Oleaginous (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts…), sprouted seeds
- Vegetable proteins (tofu, tempeh, seitan…)
Also support the emunctory organs in their work of elimination:
- Go to the sauna once a week to force the skin to eliminate abundantly and thus relieve the work of the kidneys.
- Practice a sufficiently sustained and prolonged physical activity to increase the functioning of all major functions (muscular, respiratory, cardiac, circulatory, emunctorial…).
- Drink 1 to 1.5 litres of water, green tea, herbal teas, herbal juices, vegetable broths… to eliminate water retention and toxins.
Consume depurative plants in infusion or in the form of natural food supplements:
- Black radish and artichoke for the liver
- Rhubarb and prune for the intestines
- Birch and Meadowsweet for the kidneys
- Rosemary and white stock for the lungs
- Burdock and wild pansy for the skin
When to do a cure and for how long?
For a detox cure to be effective, you must give it enough time to work. Therefore, it is recommended to follow it for a full 3 weeks.
In naturopathy, it is advised to start the cure at the change of season, as soon as the difference in temperature is felt, preferably in decreasing moonlight, to intensify the depurative effects of the organism during the first 14 days. The last week, in the New Moon, the purification of toxins should have borne fruit and you will let yourself be invaded little by little by a new energy.
Spring detox: the most important!
Spring signals the beginning of a cycle of renewal. This time of the year coincides with a re-circulation of energies. It is the time of the great spring cleansing, for our bodies too!
Spring is the season when the blood regenerates quickly. The detox cure will purify the blood, relieve the liver and invigorate the digestion.
Vegetables and fruits to favour:
- The vegetables of the spring cure: asparagus, new carrots, artichokes, aubergines, chard, broccoli, celery stalks, cauliflower, zucchini, beans, green beans, radishes, fresh salads…
- Eat plenty of dandelion, spinach, chicory, white mango shoots, artichoke, fresh peas, black radish, and make yourself herb soups to drain your liver and ease your digestion.
- The fruits of the spring cure: green apples and all red fruits, including cherries, strawberries, raspberries… in season!
At the end of the 3-week cure, you will have rid your body of the overloads and toxins accumulated throughout the winter. You should thus be less sensitive to respiratory, digestive and intestinal inflammations and allergies.
