The famous cabbage soup diet allows you to lose weight very quickly. But, like any diet, it should not be approached lightly. So what does this diet consist of and what are the risks? Our explanations.
What is the cabbage soup diet?
The cabbage soup diet is a low-calorie mono-diet that lasts 3 to 7 days.
There are several versions of this diet, but all of them include the consumption of a large amount of cabbage soup in combination with specific foods.
According to some people, cabbage is supposed to burn calories, according to others, the cabbage soup diet is a fat burner, or an ultra fast solution to lose weight .
Cabbage soup diet, instructions
For 7 days (+ stabilization phase of one week), one feeds at will on a low-calorie soup, combined with 2 or 3 other foods depending on the day.
The soup is made from seasonal vegetables (onion, cabbage, tomato, celery, carrot…) boiled without fat, then simmered until tender. They are neither ground nor mixed to increase the satiating effect.
To vary the taste of this soup, spices can be added.
On the beverage side, unsweetened teas and coffees and of course water are allowed.
To achieve this diet, you will need these three essential ingredients:
- An 8-litre pressure cooker

The Promise of the Cabbage Soup Diet
Fast and significant weight loss, from 5 to 7 kg (10 to 15 pounds).
This diet is economical and easy to follow. However, a healthy lifestyle will be necessary to keep your figure and health.
Why could the cabbage soup diet be a bad idea?
We’re putting on weight again. Weight regain after this monodiet is almost systematic, even after a stabilization phase.
Before you notice any loss of fat mass, your muscle mass is mostly melted away due to a too low protein intake. And this diet causes great fatigue or even an alteration of the general state. Beware in particular of a drop in blood pressure and/or the occurrence of cardiovascular disorders…
Always consult a doctor first to make sure you can follow the diet.
The benefits of cabbage in all its forms
Cabbage, however, provides some very interesting nutrients, which are not to be dispensed with.
Its family, the “crucifers”, includes all cabbages: green, Chinese, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. And it has been discovered that their regular consumption helps in the fight against cancer. Cabbage is also a formidable antioxidant.
And to make it easier to digest, add a small spoonful of baking soda while cooking – magic!
You could consider cabbage’s low-calorie, high-vitamin and high-fibre content as part of a balanced diet.
The cabbage soup diet should not be followed for more than 7 days, and should be considered more as a detox solution.
If you have health problems, avoid this diet.
The ideal remains to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle, with the aim of keeping a slim and healthy body. And to really lose weight, consult a professional who will tell you the steps to follow adapted to your needs, your desires, your shortcomings to lose weight slowly and surely (two words that go very well together in terms of dieting!).
